I would agree with that as well. We will likely end up sending our AAPer to Thoreau over LJ as we're not aiming for TJ and would be find with honors classes instead of AAP middle. One of her best friends (4th grade) has already started talking about going to LJ because it's AAP program is better and will help her get into TJ. It'll be interesting to see how the group splits up in the next few years. But I do think the people aspiring to TJ are more likely to stick with L-IV middle school.

As far as I know it is. Now that the AAP kids from the Langley pyramid go to Cooper, the Longfellow AAP kids all come from the McLean HS attendance area. In comparison, Carson AAP kids come from areas that feed into four different high schools: Chantilly, Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield.
Last year there were more kids at TJ who resided within the McLean HS pyramid (158) than any other FCPS pyramid. At a rate of 51 admits per year, that number would increase to 204.

This is the major FCPS AAP Centers. FCPS only sends about 300-350, and a few come from each of the other MSs. Private, LCPS, APS, FCCS, PWCS make up the rest.

This! I have one at TJ. DC2 is in MS. Probably smarter than DC1 but does not have the desire or work ethic needed for TJ. He will not be applying for TJ. If he does and magically gets in, I'll do all I can to dissuade him. TJ is NOT easy even for the brightest kid you know. Choose wisely.
TJ is great for kids into STEM. My kid would likely be in the running based on his tendency to score very high on standardized tests, has a better work ethic than either of his parents and got high A's in Algebra H and Geometry H in MS, but chose not to apply TJ because while he like and excels in STEM, it's not his main passion.

Most people are not tripping over themselves to send their kid to a FCPS middle school to send their kid to TJ. DS goes to a school that feeds into Carson. I have yet to have a single friend/neighbor mention TJ down the line. A few discuss AAP but most are just chilling and working to make sure that their kid is doing well in ES and is healthy.
Maybe people are realistic. Maybe people are clueless. Maybe think the level of obsession over TJ for some families is crazy. No idea what it is but I do know that the only place I hear anyone discussing TJ is on this board.
And that includes my friends whose kids are taking Algebra 1 Honors in 7th grade.
We don't talk about TJ. We post on DCUM in secret without you.
