The parents will be so pleased you thought to give a college contribution rather than more stuff they have to store until she's ready to play with it, or find room for in their house.

A college fund contribution is a great and very thoughtful gift that most prob won't think to give.

x2. Toy kitchens got a lot of use as soon as they were able to pull themselves up on it. Both sexes appreciated them. We cook most meals at home, though, which may make part of the difference?

Something they will play with for awhile. A toy kitchen is better after age 2, so save that one, but it's something you'll use for sure so it's definitely not a bad idea.

A play tent. Get one that's collapsible
A play tunnel. Ditto the collapsible part.
Some ride on/in thing, like the toy coupe or wagon.

I think the first big gift we got our daughter was for Xmas when she was 18 months old. We got a little kid table and chairs set. Still going strong 4 years later!

really nice wagon--useful for years. play kitchen. kids table/chairs (works for tea parties, coloring, etc.)

DH bought this for our 1yo and I thought it was ridiculous, but here we are at 3.5yo and still using it almost daily. At one DD was able to use it with guidance and by 18mos was able to do it on her own.
