Top of the Lake is also an excellent series in the same vein as Broadchurch, etc. Also, The Killing.

Seriously. Also, if you like period pieces, Foyle's War, George Gently and Grantchester are all terrific.

Broadchurch is done.

Anybody watching Rob Lowe as an American detective in rural Boston, Lincolnshire? Critics panned it, but I'm one episode in and like it. He is widowed, like his Brit Detective counterparts, which is nice.

OP here. Oh, bummer. Sorry! I set expectations too high.

(Maybe I got carried away by the hot police detective/now June's husband?)

It doesn't compare even a little to Broadchurch and The Fall, both of which were excellent suspense/mystery shows. The Five seems so amateurish by comparison, too many convenient connections, and dumb story lines. Sorry to be the Debbie Downer, and I'll finish it to see if it improves, but I loved the other two shows and can barely watch this one.

I binged it after reading these recommendations but I agree with you, PP. The Five felt like the British equivalent of a Lifetime series.

Yes! Exactly. I’m going to finish it just to see it through, but I’m rolling my eyes constantly.

Also Undercover. In Flemish, I think. I just put on English dubbing and all good.

I'm not sure what appealed to you most about these, but if it was the family complexity and sense of place that drew you in and not just the criminal suspense aspect, you would probably like Last Tango in Halifax. LTF was created by Sally Wainwright, the creator of Happy Valley, and also stars the excellent Sarah Lancashire.

It's not a crime drama, so it's lighter and funny but also moving and complicated. Just wonderful.
