Bates. Less likely to encounter toxic masculinity.

Recently read two newspaper articles about racism at Bates College. Very disturbing allegations. One involved the dismissal of the longtime head of security at Bates College, while the other shares details of a racial discrimination lawsuit filed by the head football coach at Bates College.

Agree that Bates College and Colgate University offer contrasting environments. I doubt that a student well suited for one would be comfortable at the other as Colgate is quite preppy and fratty with lots of students targeting Wall Street finance type positions, whereas Bates offers a crunchy, granola option for those interested in environmental issues as well as the study of psychology. (And, yes, I am aware that Colgate offers psychology & environmental studies options.)

You say that like it's a good thing

The school was founded in the 1850s as both integrated and coeducational. It has never had private clubs of any kind. It remains open and welcoming to students of all backgrounds. If that's not a good thing in your view, take a good hard look at yourself.

Well said PP. Bates is very proud of that legacy and continues to be a welcoming place today. It’s also full of smart, fun people who appreciate that. Not sure how that could be spun in a negative way either.

To her kid, and their family it is. Regardless it is a good perspective on the Bates community -- if you disagree or think that's unimportant you won't waste your money and time applying.

Williams or Swarthmore doesn't have the same ring as Duquesne. I bet there is someone who would consider naming their kid one of these names.
