There is no surer sign of being a transplant (especially a newish one) than calling the DC area "DMV." Dead giveaway.

hell no. the DMV is the department of motor vehicles

and yes, I am born and raised in Silver Spring and Bethesda. Went to HS in DC, and went to UMD College Park. So I'm about as local as they come.

Yup. Us too.

I’m from here.

When I’m away Talking to people I say DC ... not DC metro, not DC area.. just DC.

If im home i either say DC, Maryland or Virginia. I’m rarely unsure where I want to go IRL.

Where do you work? Maryland or I’ll say Rockville or I’ll say white flint metro ... but I’m not gonna DMV or DC area.

Where do you want to meet ... Virginia or Tysons.

Nobody says DC area IRL either.

DMV is used only in email, texting and social media.

I grew up here and never really called it the DMV before. I would've referred to the area as DC metro area.

When I first heard it I thought people were talking about the Department of Motor Vehicles or some other area like Detroit, Dallas or some other city.

Can't remember when/where I first started hearing it referred to as such. Might've been ten or fifteen years ago? And I think it was on the radio like on 99.5 and also online on message boards and forums. I figured it was a term the younger generation or DC transplants used.

I'm AA and a newcomer to DC, but I've heard this term used by black folks here for years. White people just caught on more recently.

Troll fail.

OP here realizing I should have clarified that I'm local. Thread prompted by a fundraising pitch I heard on WAMU yesterday that used the term. I cringed and figured it must have been written by someone who isn't from here.
