I worked with middle schoolers and the oldest were 14. There is no way I would trust them in that situation. Their brains do not work the way ours do. I would be okay with an older teen staying home in that situation, but not a younger one who is 13. Nope. Stupid risk to take. DV is extremely unpredictable and can lead quickly to shootings. My teen does not need to be home alone for that and dealing with the police when they come around afterward. These are traumatic events. I can't believe people are so blase about it.

My 13 yr old is a smart, confident girl with a lot of street smarts. I would give her the option of staying home or coming with us.

I am shocked at all the people detailing how to pack a bag for the teenager, as if she can't do it herself.

That was the worst we had to deal with when we lived next door to this situation. If you think she can make the correct choices under pressure then leave her home alone.

She probably came from a family where her father treated her mother badly, so this is “home” to her. This stuff just gets passed on from one generation to the next.

Or the girlfriend might come pounding on the door, asking for help. We had volatile neighbors when I was a kid, and this happened more than once.

So don't answer the door.

+1 I don't quite get the concern there either. By that age my kids would've been able to follow instructions to not answer the door.

Seems overreaching with regard to helicopter parenting if you ask me and I am not a fan at all of trying to shield kids from seeing/hearing anything unpleasant until they're freaking 30 years old, but hey it's your teen and you know her best so do whatever you think is best.

Adults fighting is disturbing even when you are an adult. Your kid can come with you, OP. She can pack a bag and come with you to the hospital.

The neighbor situation would not factor into my reasoning, honestly. I would leave her by herself at home, with the usual home rules.

My teen stays home and has to walk the dog.
