Why? Bc you can not afford to pay that? No one is forcing anyone to pay more than they can afford. Yes, some nannies make $20-$30/hr for one kid. Some nannies make $18-$20 and others make $15/hr. The responses you posted lead me to believe those nannies are desperate and English isn’t their first language. They are more inclined to take what they can get. Nannies making $20-$30 are usually able to be more selective and have more offers.

It's not the truth because I can afford that. You are so angry over a forum post.
If you can afford that then you wouldn’t be getting defensive and calling someone angry. If you can afford that then you wouldn’t have a hard time believing some nannies make that. You cannot tell tone through the post but here you are projecting. I don’t get angry from the post but someone who is angry and bitter themselves might.

No, but fluency in English is generally required to make a higher salary. Being fluent additional languages will also up your salary. That is one qualification that earns a higher salary.

Agree. We hired a non English speaking nanny thinking immersion would be wonderful. We are still trying to reverse the damage. Never again.
Completely sincere question: how much damage could there be? The child lives with you, who speaks English, correct?

We paid our nanny $20 an hour, and over forty hours followed standard overtime pay.
That said, I think because the forums are separate from the rest of the dcum forums, they are mostly unhappy and/or unemployed caregivers who troll those forums and profusely post unrealistic scenarios

As I have posted before, our nanny makes $28 an hour for one child. We wanted an educated (she has a masters degree in ECD), experiences (10 plus years), former preschool teacher who speaks impeccable English and rudimentary French. She is also an amazing, loving, devoted nanny.
My best friend pays $22 an hour for a wonderful, loving and hardworking nanny who speaks broken English and fluent Spanish. She works off the books which is not an option for us.
+1. Different families have different expectations, too. We explored the possibility of a nanny share with our old neighbors, and came to an agreement on a target rate of $18-$20/hour, on the books. For that rate, I expected strong English skills and willingness to walk DC to local parks/activities during "our" hours. Neighbors' additional expectations included school pick-up (driving), cooking dinner, and doing light housework while watching their 2 kids. There's a reason we never found any mutually agreeable candidates.
