I am a teacher at a school that started using Xfinity Center at UMd a few years ago. Compared to DAR, it is AMAZING! Kids can bring unlimited guests, parking is free and simply a breeze, and things run SOOO smoothly because of the space available to prepare the kids to walk in, separate entrances and exits for parents, and ample space for kids to pick up diplomas afterward. Xfinity Center is also very well staffed, and the people working there are very courteous and helpful.

Metro says it is a 24 minute walk
I’m a teacher who rides Metro to graduation at DAR every year. I get off at Farragut North, and it’s a 12 minute walk when I make all the lights. Maybe 15 at the most when I have to wait a bit to cross streets.

It’s really a dignified place for such a special occasion. We’ve had three graduations there and I’ve never heard anyone complain from hundreds of families we know or are acquainted with. Plus, as pointed out, there are no facilities in Montgomery County that could hold the crowds.

MCPS isn’t going to build a 5,000 ft commencement center. Do schools elsewhere actually do that?
A few years back there was a plan for a multi-purpose arena to be built by the Shady Grove metro station, that would host, among other events, MCPS graduations. I don't know what ever became of that project.

Both the HS s my kids went to offered bus service to UMD. I assume most schools do?
It was $10 pp one-way for the charter at my kid's school. Cheaper to just pay to park.
