If I see this, I get the impression that the person who owns the car went to the school.

I have an alumni tag for an out-of-state private that’s not Ivy but pretty good, and has a reputation for beautiful, well-dressed rich girls. I drive a crappy older car with goldfish in every crevice, we live in a very modest house that needs updating, we have zero extra cash, my clothes are from Target, I have a gut from having kids and eating a lot of those goldfish, and I need a haircut and some Botox stat. I like to think people do a double-take when they see the tag and wonder where I went off the rails


No, people just assume you bought used and it came with it or something.

That’s the kind of thing we would never buy but my mom or MIL would buy one of us for Christmas and we’d feel obligated to use it.

I carried a lot of childhood trauma into adulthood. One of the ways it manifested was me sabotaging myself and squandering opportunities. I enrolled in college many times over the years and either dropped out or failed out. I had a baby, and I wanted to prove to myself that I could be something other than a f*ck up. I enrolled in undergrad again part time at 27 and didn't tell a soul. Five years later, I got my master's degree. The first thing I did after graduation was go to the bookstore and buy alumni tags and a t-shirt for my little girl.

Maybe his dying mother crawled hundreds of miles over broken glass to bring him the frame, and expired in his arms as she handed it over.

He hates it, and in fact didn’t even attend that particular school, but given everything that his mother sacrificed to bring it to him, he has no choice.
