Love them.

My kids are teens now, but I remember going to a few pool parties. My kids were okay swimmers, but my eyes were always drawn to the children who were not strong swimmers and their water wings were not doing the job. There was always that one kid who worried me, and more than once needed help.

Pool parties always made me nervous. I refused to host one. Too much liability.

I don't mind them when someone rents a private or public pool. I like the fact that there is a lifeguard on duty because I am concerned about drownings and a lot of people don't watch their younger kids. It's also easier to leave those parties, there is a scheduled end time and I feel like I get less "oh, stay and have another drink" comments from hosts. Sorry, but when my kid is cranky and tired and so are we it's time to go home.

Clear communication is important
-one recent party: no pool mentioned on the invite. So I showed up with no suits. Happened to have oldest dd’s in the car along with one towel. Middle child was practically having a tantrum for being left out. Luckily dh was coming late and could stop by the house and bring middle child’s suit.
-another party: I didn’t know gifts were going to be opened in the formal living room after the pool portion was done. Apparently another family did, and had brought a change of clothes, got all nice looking. I didn’t bring dry clothes for myself or the kids. Just hanging out with our towels and swimsuits while everyone else was dressed.

As much as I love swimming, I don't want to be half naked when I am talking to someone other than my family members. If I am wearing a swimsuit I want to be in the pool.

Who needs a swimsuit.

I like them as a guest.
I dislike them as a host because I don’t like the rain possibility.

I don’t like getting in the pool. I have a good body for a bathing suit, but don’t like wearing one around neighbors, etc.

I hate daytime ones when it’s so frickin hot and humid. I prefer to be inside in AC, not on a pool deck.

I’m not 10. There is no fun at the pool for me and I hate all of the wet swim paraphernalia —lugging it and wet towels from somebody’s home.

I’m saying, seats/snacks/conversation right next to the pool is better than me practically pacing back and forth because there is party going on all over the property.

Florida resident here. So more than 50% of parties are pool parties.

I like pool parties when
-there is a time when everyone is out of the pool / it gets fenced off or closed off. Gives me a break to eat and not constantly watch my toddler.
-when it’s an age-group party. Like a bunch of 7-9 yos playing at the 8yo bday party. Conversely, it’s annoying when it’s all ages. 4yos + 8yos + jerk 12yo boys, and then my toddler is asking me to get in and no I don’t want to get in a crowded pool. But ok, I will...
-there is plenty of seating near pool’s edge so parents can watch better. Not just for safety but for behavior. It’s late relaxing than peeking back and forth from the snacks table deep inside the hour back out to the pool. If you can just sit and have a conversation and keep constant eyes on the pool, it’s great.

-I have seen this idea, but never seen it done: hire a lifeguard for the party, just to be an extra set of eyes.
