I’m the poster who said to get a bucket and soak for a long time. I put 3-5 heaping scoops of Oxiclean in my mop bucket and fill it 1/2 way with scalding water. Then I stir stir stir until I can’t dissolve any more.

We gave and received a ton 0-2 or so, but as she got older and grew more slowly and is more active less so. After that, primarily things like jackets, rain boots, and other things not worn super frequently.

I have twins so there is nothing to hand down but I consign or give away 99% of what I buy for them. Certain things are ruined (i.e. a dress was just ripped on a non-seam location and even with sewing is not back to perfect condition). I stain treat everything so it lasts.

Can you tell me exactly how you get stains out (new or old) with oxi? I’m 3/4 through my first tub of it and still can’t reliably get food or washable paint stains out.

Get a Rubbermaid tote or large bucket. Fill it with the hottest water your tap can make. Dissolve as much oxyclean in it as will dissolve. Lots of stirring. Like making jello. Submerge clothes and let soak for 24-48hrs. Then wash with double rinse. Dry in sunlight. Use a paint stir stick or broom handle to stir at first - water should be that hot. Then stir every few hours you are awake until you wash.

I'm a different poster.

I have soaked socks & under wears in 1 gal hot water & 1 cup oxi clean, it didn't make much of a difference. What is your water to oxi ratio?

I'd like to know too...oxiclean helps on a lot of stuff, but we have a very rough and messy toddler and there are several things I'll end up tossing vs passing down due to stains/discoloration.

Up to size 2T, everything.
3T-4T - maybe 50%? No pants survive without holes.
5+ - I think rain coats, snow boots, swim suits, and special occasion outfits might survive to be used by my 2nd child. I thought it was great having 2 boys for hand me downs, but the first one has a knack for destroying clothes.

Pants have not been lasting now that they are in elementary. My kids are skinny and DS wore his pants for 2 years this round.

I had to buy new pants for both boys. Shorts are fine. Sweatshirts fine. Jackets fine.

I 2nd this. I have 10 and 11yr old boys. Up until age 6 everything got passed down. Now everything makes it except for long pants. The younger one is growing faster now and has caught up in clothing size so we had to buy some more shorts since they are in the same size. Younger one has surpassed his big brother in shoe size so dress shoes/snow boots will now get passed up the line. Sneakers never get passed along since they get worn out first.

Pants are least likely to make it to hand-me-down status. So many rips at the knee, even before my DS outgrows them. I'm fairly certain he's practicing sliding on his knees at school, nothing else could account for it.

Shirts usually make it through. Sometimes they get stained, but I can get most of them out -- only thing I haven't been able to get out is some paint stains from art class.

Not a whole lot was stained to the point it couldnt be fixed. Dont remember about ripped. Wasn't a lot. DS 1 received A TON of clothes. I don't think he wore half of them!

I passed on the majority of girl stuff newborn to 4t. All of it very good or excellent condition. Then my daughter started blowing out knees on leggings, so I’d say maybe half the 5t and up leggings made it to pass on, dresses, coats, and shirts pretty much all made it. But now that she’s in 10s, she’s wearing the clothes much longer between size changes and I’m noticing more things are getting faded and worn looking so I will cull those when she outgrows this size.

My son is just outgrowing his 5t stuff and thus far I’ve passed on pretty much everything except a few lighter colored shirts he got tomato sauce on at daycare and I couldn’t get it out.
