I heard horrible things about the Ameda Purely Yours, but it was the only thing my insurance would cover. Turns out it's been fine for me so far (it's a compact pump, a closed system and takes batteries so those are some pros). So if your insurance won't cover the Spectra I would not stress out too much and just try whatever it is they can give you as it might work fine.

Don’t get new parts! Just buy the back flow adapters and add to your medela parts.

It's in a different price category alright. I got more output with the Spectra than the Symphony.


Same. Rented a Symphony for a while and then got a Spectra - Spectra was better in terms of comfort and output for me.

I have a ton of pumps now.

My favorites are:

1) BelleMa Euphoria Pro-- super-comfortable, easy to use, mimics baby's pattern, quiet
2) Spectra S2-- comfortable, easy to use, decently quiet
3) Spectra S9-- just like the S2, but pocket-sized. I use it with my Freemie cups.

I hate my Medela pump with a passion. It hurts and is loud.

Just coming to the end of almost 14 months of breastfeeding. I have a spectra S1, and recommend it for pumping at home and especially for travel. At home, I also used a haakaa and Medela harmony (hand pump). Both very useful for collecting a bit extra in the wee morning hours or relieving enforcement. At work, I had access to a Medela symphony. I found the Symphony a bit more comfortable than the Spectra. One recommendation is to go to the breastfeeding center with your pump and have a LC show you how to use it properly and make sure you’re using the right size flanges. Good luck!!
