I was born with or raised to have an unusually high level of empathy. I am painfully aware of the noise I make. I can't imagime just being able to live life not aware of that.

It's something about hearing humans eat. My parents farmed. I found the sound of cattle eating their hay or sileage peaceful, but hearing my mom eat made me want to strangle her.

It is rude. I don't want to hear you slurp your food. Just stop it.

Broaden your mind a little. Not every culture has the same conception of “manners.”

In Japan, slurping soup is actually considered a respectable thing.

Perhaps you live there.....??!

So he should go to Japan to eat?

My mom used to call me out for making loud noises when I drink. I felt deeply ashamed. As an adult, a dentist looked in my mouth and asked if I made a lot of noise when I swallow. I said yes in shock. He said I had a common harmless deformity of the palate and showed me how to reduce the noise. It’s a weird method of drinking though and I never use it.

OP here.

Growing up, dh was taught to eat as quickly as possible. No conversation at the table. Eat fast, eat a lot, and get away from the table.

He does not engage in conversation. He rarely answers a question orcresponds to a comment.

I don't know why he was eating so loudly today.

This. My dh sounds like a cow crunching on nuts but complains about me. I plan to record his smacking and play it back for him. He is so sensitive to noise and doesn't realize he makes the same amount of noise I do.

Guarantee if I played a recording of himself he would come into the room and ask me to eat quieter. Plan to try it now!
