How about as a nickname for Meredith? I knew one who went by Mindy, it's no further off.

Miriam is a classic name. That's like saying William or Charlie are ugly names.

I really don't like this name and don't think it's pretty. It's crazy popular though. I know more Mias than I know Olivias/Avas/Charlottes

I know a Mia whose full legal name is Mia, and also a Mia whose real name is Amelia. Both ways work just fine!

+1. Why would you saddle a little girl with a weird, old-lady name like Miriam?

Because it's lovely and classic? I love Miriam but it sounds bad with our last name. (Just found out I'm having another boy, so there goes the girl's name waiting in the wings anyway....)

I think Miriam is a beautiful name. how is it weird?

Straight out of the secretarial pool in 1964.

Mia is a real name. It's relatively common in Finland. Actress Mia Wasikowska. Steven Tyler's daughter is named Mia.

We had a friend who has a daughter named Mia. She was married to a Czech, and in the Czech Republic, names that are not "on the calendar" (of saints) have to be approved by the registrar, which requires showing that the name is "registered in some country of the world and was not insulting or demeaning." Mia passed the test, and she was allowed to name her baby Mia. So, it's official--it's a real name.

It’s a real name — and a rather nice one, too.

Anonymous wrote:"Mia" is a common term for bulimia ("Ana" is anorexia).

There are a lot of "pro-ana" and "pro-mia" sites. It's a "thing." I wouldn't name my child this.

My name is Ana. Its a non issue.
