I am so sorry, OP. We lost our cat very suddenly in a similar way, a few years ago. One second he was dashing around the house being his usual charming madman self, the next he fell over panting - then died. The vet told us it was likely a stroke or a heart attack.
It hurts so much to lose these wonderful creatures. My heart is with you and your family.

OP here - thank you for this. Just devastating. It sounds very similar to the timeline with ours. I'm sorry you didn't have more time with her.

This is not uncommon, OP. I’m so sorry it happened to you. My brother’s 12 year old dog died suddenly one day last year. She hadn’t been eating quite as much for a few weeks prior but other than that seemed fine.
Dogs and cats are masters at hiding serious illness until it’s very far advanced, and they can also develop serious illness quickly, between regular vet visits. All we can do is love them and care for them as best we can, knowing their lives are short. Hugs to you.

Yeah, most people have no idea how damaging and dangerous RoundUp / glyphosate is. Didn't Monsanto just lose yet another law suit? It's incredible. It should be banned.

OP I’m so sorry. We lost our 15-year-old cat suddenly a few weeks ago. He was old but showed no signs of illness until the week he died. Then he stopped eating and the vet ran some tests. All normal. Then she performed an ultrasound and found masses in his pancreas and liver. The night we received the diagnosis, he died in my arms. The vet thinks it was a rupture. There was no saving him and it happened so fast. I’m still sick with grief and guilt we didn’t know, but grateful his ending was relatively quick. You’re never ready, OP. It’s heartbreaking to lose a family member. I wish you many happy memories of your beloved dog. Try not to dwell on the whys or what if’s. Just try to be grateful for the happy times you had together.

I’m sorry, op. My sister was at the vet a few months ago. A dog and owner were checking out and the dogs legs gave out and it died within the minute. The dog was only there for its regular check up and there were no concerns at all.
It was absolutely traumatic for everyone there. My sister called me crying. The vet had no answers and was just as shocked as everyone else.
It can happen for all living beings. I’m sorry it has happened to you.

I'm so sorry, OP! I, too, had a Westie die at about that age...on Dec. 23. Had not been sick or anything. Vet said his best guess was an enlarged heart.
At any rate, all you can do is love them and give them the best life you can. You did that. I am so sorry. God bless you and your family.

+1 to likely stroke--mainly because of the loss of use of the hind legs. My cat died even more quickly recently, and I feel the same as many of you have mentioned: terribly sad to lose him but grateful that he died quickly and likely with little or no pain.

I let our dog out to pee, and when I called her back in she was just weirdly standing there and wouldn’t move. Took her to ER and she was bleeding internally from a huge tumor and we had to put her down. She seemed totally fine before then, excited to go out that night. She was almost 13 but it was so sudden. Even so, I knew the moment I saw her standing there panting it was the end.

My husband lost his childhood dog to a choking incident that he witnessed. He still feels pain from that shock but we have had several dogs since then. The joy of having a dog outweighs even the risk of something like that happening again.
