My kid is suffering with sudden and severe asthma since April, and fourth quarter and final exams brought 2 final grades down to c+. He has never had asthma before and he has been on and off large doses of prednisone and literally unable to sleep more than a few hours a night for weeks at a time, which makes studying and focusing quite difficult. His teachers have been unwilling to provide extra opportunities to bring his grade up. He is normally a solid b student, but has never had a c before.

Should he contact his college? He doesn’t want to make excuses and seem like a whiner, but I don’t want them to think he’s just slacking off. He has actually worked twice as hard this quarter to keep up with his work. Should we just wait and see if the college asks for an explanation?

This semester (2nd semester SR year) she is likely going to get her first 'C'. She is worried it will impact her acceptance. Of course I can't find anything in writing about this on the NU website.

Bah! Id wager the HS teacher is threatening Cs just to keep the kids in line. Senior spring teachers/schools have zero control, good or bad its all over. The habit/routine of them being in control keeps ppl in line. Once the kids figure it out? ... all over!

I’ve heard of kids starting college on academic probation after issues senior year.

An east coast college (can't remember which one other than it was a highly selective one) rescinded the offer when a student was found cheating/plagiarism and the principal told the college.

Another school, but DDs school over admitted and was looking to cut kids out of the freshman class. Said any grade C or below would make them ineligible. Got school counselor involved and her offer remained along w/ scholarship.

I am glad the OP asked this question because I have been concerned about my DS's performance this last quarter. Definitely has a case of senioritis lol. I don't think he will get a C, but he might get a couple of Bs...this is a kid who pretty much get's straight A's. I guess he deserves to chill after all his hard work.

I got in early at UVA and had a horrible semester after that. Combo of burnout/senioritis and a lot of stress at home from parents who fought all the time. I got a letter asking me to explain. I basically explained what happened with an emphasis on the home piece and all was forgiven.
