Agree. I understand if health somehow doesn't fit in the schedule or frees up taking a full year class, but tech doesn't make sense. It's also a class that's a real slog of busy work on a compressed time frame, but would be an easy period, possibly fun during the school year.

I'm lucky in that we can afford the cost (although it's not without pain), but it makes a real difference in one child's ability to be able to continue with band for all four years at RMIB, and freeing up space for a class for my other child who is taking AP Chem next year (a double period).

It's less than optimal to have to pay for a class that's in fulfillment of a ridiculous requirement (why can't computer programming or AP Computer Programming -- Java satisfy the requirement?) but it's not as simple a decision to take it during the year to save $600 for every family.

this is not really a "rule," in the sense that no one can force you. But, most schools try to get kids to take it early (9th or 10th) so there is no graduation crunch.

PS- You don't have to do both semesters of Tech/CS in a compressed time period. Mine did one semester online during the school year and will do another semester (in 3 weeks) over the summer. Special circumstances, though.

For the tech requirement, it's either Fundamentals of Technology or Fundamentals of Computer Science over the summer. You don't have to do both. Each is 6 weeks with three face-to-face meetings. My kids are doing computer science.

There are two classes that fill the tech requirement, foundations of tech and foundations of computer science. It's not necessary to take both. During the school year, AP computer science principles, is a third option to fill the requirement.
