My kid is really into Minecraft, so maybe we should check it out.

(Yes, OP, it is an absolutely amazing school. Kudos!)

Let? I would be thrilled.

I wonder if that is the reason the OP is "worried"?

If my child was interested in mining engineering, my only thought would be to make sure they checked out getting a minor (second major) in geology.

The engineering side of getting at resource once they are found is fine but figuring out how to find resources underground is going to be cutting edge for at least the next 50 years.

Is the kid actually interested in mining, or is mom just naively put off by the name?

VT offers mining engineering too. Would you object to that?

They do give merit aid to the "pretty darn good but not stupendous" dmv students. I know because my son got some. Went elsewhere because he wanted bigger, but it was definitely high on his and our list.

"Mining is a somewhat nomadic career. Engineers go from place to place a lot. Once you're senior enough, you could probably settle down at company HQ or something but the early years would usually mean a lot of moving around."

30 odd years ago I attended a top 10 engineering school. Almost all of my friends, no matter which engineering major they ended up in, have had quite nomadic careers.

Maybe some of that was because the top 10 school drew us from all over to begin with and were willing to move more than average, but I think it says more about what corporate jobs and corporate advancement requires.

My question to actual mining engineers would be more about how long assignments last rather than about if you have to move every few years. Moving 15 times over a career is one thing, moving 60 odd times is another.

I worked with 4 school of mines grads. Mining is a somewhat nomadic career. Engineers go from place to place a lot. Once you're senior enough, you could probably settle down at company HQ or something but the early years would usually mean a lot of moving around.

She probably thinks he'll end up at the pit face with a drill, or pushing the cart full of coal through the dark, cramped tunnel.

I suppose it's Colorado's smaller and more exclusive version of VT.

Yes, and I would let my DD go too if that were her choice. It’s not just about mining coal.
