NP but the flu this year came on really quickly -- my DD went in to school perfectly fine and came home lethargic with a 102.5 fever (we got called by SACC, too, but there had not been a visit to the nurse).

Our FCPS nurse will call if the child is not feeling well, but depending on he situation they may say, "[Child] stated he was not feeling well; however, he does not have a fever. You may pick him up, or I can send him back to class."

OP, if your child had gone to the nurse near the end of the day and didn't have a fever, the nurse may have figured there was no need to call because 1) there was no fever and 2) you would see your child soon since school was almost out (unaware your child was going to aftercare).

FCPS has a strict policy that any injury to the head requires a 20 minute observation period and a mandatory call home.

It's all protocol.

It was blood in a place that it should not have been coming out of. Told the school to call me if my child reported it and they refused. Doctor explained it all to the child. Child reported it to the teacher who said write her a note and she emailed me at 5 PM. Doctor wanted child back immediately or ER. That day child was admitted inpatient. If my child tells you they are sick and need mom or a doctor, they should call. Not a kid complaining about every little thing so if they are, its serious.

Yes, I want my day interrupted. It should be my call to pick up my child/doctor, not theirs.


Sounds like your kid shouldn’t have been at school. Maybe you made the wrong call?

DD is usually the one to tell me if she went to the nurse. That’s fine with me. I only want the big calls.

But I will say, the one time I got a call, the nurse got it wrong. She thought DD was fine and just being dramatic when she fell off the top of the slide. She actually broke her arm, but the nurse never examined her. Just asked her where it hurt. Called me and said it was up to me, but she thought DD was fine to go back to class. Doctor figured out real fast the arm was actually broken. Oh, well. At least she called.

Usually I only get a call if the nurse thinks my child needs to get picked up early. The one exception was when she fell in the classroom and bumped her head, nurse called but said I didn't need to come in.

My son's school nurse emails if my son visited her and returned to class. She calls if he needs to be picked up.
