We've gotten a few letters over the years. Usually we just provide documentation of what they need and then it's fine. Don't worry - it's most likely not a big deal!

We moved and bought a house in 2016. We were notified this year of a mistake that will cost us 5k.

According to USPS, certified mail simply gives the sender ( IRS) a receipt that your letter has been delivered. Imagine how many people tell the IRS that they never received any correspondence? The IRS wants "proof" that hey contacted you and certified mail is their preferred method. You are going to worse case scenario. Relax. They probably want clarification or a form.

Regarding Informed Delivery, it often takes another day for my mail to arrive. If all depends when your mailman pickups his delivery for the day.

OP Here. So the USPS Informed Delivery (that I have for our unreliable mail service) said we had an Amazon package also due today, I tracked the number and it said "Delivered to mailbox. 4:06 pm". I run home in between meetings, and guess what? No mail! I don't where it was delivered to, but it certainly wasn't my mail box. And if we owe them money, how are we to know without the F-ing mail?

We were once "randomly selected" for an audit that required we provide them with every monthly financial statement (banks, credit cards, investment reports etc) over an 18 month period. They wanted to make sure that every dollar of income was reported. With checking accounts it meant that every dollar that came in had to be accounted for. It was brutal! We ended up having to send them something like 75 pounds of paperwork and tons of pages of justification. Our accounting fees were something like $7500. At the end of the many month process it turned out that all we couldn't explain was about $200 in revenue from a small jewelry business I have. They then wanted us to pay taxes on that. My husband went nuclear given that we had paid something like $300,000 in taxes and they wanted another $60 plus our accounting fees were not deductible. He threatened to go public and sue them for abuse. They decided to close the case.

I hate any mail from the IRS I filled out a FAFSA and imported the income they had to send me the notification of the download in a letter. Probably nothing OP

Can't you get the letters and read why they say? Why agonize over the unknown?

Don't go berserk. Sometimes they are just asking for a single piece of documentation and you're done.

I once got a certified letter saying I owed $17,000 and had underreported the sale of stocks -- turned out it was because I had not listed some open short sales properly. I wrote them a letter with copies of all the transaction reports and that was the end of it.

Definitely terrifying to open, though!

The IRS people on the phone are actually surprisingly professional and helpful.

I also received IRS mail once, but it wasn't certified. They notified me that my son's SSN was incorrect. Turns out I transposed two of the numbers. I called IRS customer service and gave the lady his correct SSN over the phone. She told me it was all taken care of and we got our refund the next day or two.
