That's a ridiculous gripe. For any curriculum out there, kids who don't need as much repetition should only do select problems. Every single curriculum would be too much work if you were to force a kid who learns concepts easily to do every single problem. The second point is spot on, though. BA is aimed at kids who are bright in math. It would be a disaster to use with kids who are average or weak at math.

BA is definitely the best

My dd found khan academy really, really helpful for getting through high school/Ap math, gov, and bio. She watched them constantly.

I saw somewhere that there's a free trial for Dreambox and Aleks during Covid and/or teacher appreciation month. Has anyone heard of these platforms?

My DC has access to IXL through school, but I am not seeing much benefit for my child. He's either works mindlessly to attain a certain score or gives up on a weak skills when he sees his score going backwards. So he's unlikely to choose a weak skill which would be the whole point of doing IXL. Also, for certain topics like fraction, he's too quick/lazy and does things in his head to his detriment (as opposed to working out the conversions on a scratch paper). So the ideal resource really depends on the topic and whether it's for deeper enrichment (Beast Academy), extra practice for fluency (Singapore math), or learning a new concept (? Khan video or Aleks, maybe).

I agree that IXL can be demoralizing when scores dip despite time spent.

I LOVE the concept of Beast Academy - fun graphic novel books and problems that promote critical thinking. My DC when he was in 3rd or 4th grade loved "browsing" the comics for the cute characters. But not being a mathy kid, he didn't want to do the workbook problems. He prefers more classically boring workbooks, like Singapore math, that seem more manageable to him.

Still trying to find a way to help him with problem solving skills that isn't overwhelming or too challenging. Does Khan Academy have units on word problems (for things like fraction, ratios, etc)?

I just say that IXL is the worst.

IXL is the work of satan

Haven't used Beast before but definitely have used IXL and Khan. IXL was great with the questions but if kids got something wrong they would have to work their way up again to the same level question (reminds me of those Kumon booklets that you just keeping writing until you get it all correct). Khan was great for learning new concepts and also reviewing concepts. Our kid's teacher recommended Beestar awhile back and we've been using it and haven't had any issues with it.
