Normal. For some reason I am prone to getting similar infected cysts, but in my armpit. I've had to get 2 lanced and drained as an adult and it was extraordinarily painful (though the armpit is much more sensitive than the ear I think). The doctor put topical numbing spray on it but that burned quite a bit - I'm not sure it really helped.

Oh, my DD is 6 not 5 if that matters much. I think it is a little on the young side but not that young. A lot of her class friends have their ears pierced already too . But of course my DD would be allergic to the metal and this would occur.
