You do not need a reason to switch nannies. You don’t click with the nanny and that is reason enough. You question whether the nanny is prioritizing your children or her errands, that is reason enough. For the above, I would give her the severance stated in your contract and not have her come back. I would also get to the bottom of what actually happened by contacting the school, which you can do when you pick your child up today, as I assume the nanny won’t be doing it! If she indeed lied or left your baby in the care of a stranger (or worse, alone in the car) she is fired for cause without severance.

+1 This. And if you're at the point where you're making accusations to the nanny that seem believable to you and she's denying them, you're probably at the point of getting a new nanny anyway.

This. Kids don’t make up cohesive stories that hold up for days at preschool to kinder age.

You may not like her and that's enough reason to find someone else.
However, you don't know if she was running errands or had a diaper issue. Kids "lie" all the time, some on purpose, some to make a better story, some fill in gaps with their imagination and some plain ol' make stuff up. Ask your kindergartner with open ended questions, and call and ask the office if they remember seeing the baby at pick up.

Bad judgement. She should have carried the baby, no matter how late, to get the other two.
Are you paying enough to attract more reliable professionals, OP? Because a baby, preschooler and Kindergartner sounds hellish.
