I'm curious about this. How do people not know? I live in DC and I can figure out who voted for Trump from their standpoints on different things. For instance, one acquaintance made a remark about #metoo and victim mentality, chances are R. Another commented about never letting her son go to the bathroom alone because of transgender people, chances are R. People mention articles they read and news they saw and usually say I read this on the WaPo or saw this on Fox News, and then you can figure out who they voted for. You might think you're hidden, but I doubt it.

Those who meticulously avoid the subject of politics, who are religious or appear conservative in other ways, I assume are Trump supporters and avoid accordingly. This is what is wrong with politics today, right here. So the people who are religious, or somehow fit your stereotype of a conservative, or even those who don't want to talk about politics at all, are suddenly Trump supporters? This is like the communist witch-hunts of the 1950s all over again.

Your assumption would be wrong, in many cases. I match all 3 of your criteria and I'm a Democrat... for now. Not so sure where I fit in anymore.

F 90% of the time

Find it super hard to believe people who live in the DMV don't discuss politics or news or views with friends. Cab and Uber drivers, the cashiers at the store, literally everywhere I go, someone is mentioning something political. But, sure.

I assume anyone who doesn’t bash the idiot Orange Turd is a supporter.

But refusing to engage is how we all got here. I went to school with a lot of conservative folks, and I was one of the few liberals. I was never afraid to speak up and offer my views. And my friends liked that I challenged them. It helps to understand others if you are willing to consider the opposing viewpoint. It either strengthens your own argument or can bring you to a more moderate viewpoint on a topic as you may not have known key facts before. It mostly helps with the thing so many in national politics have forgotten - compromise.

I will say most of my friends who considered themselves strong republicans in college are now much more moderate as adults. They have either declared themselves Independent or Libertarian. Most walked away from the R’s before 2016 over the hard line social or gun stands. One said he walked away over the choice of Palin and the anti-Intellectual views of the party/base. Many still consider themselves fiscally conservative, but can no longer support Rs.

G here. But I don’t think they are loons. I think they are just wrong and misguided, despite being intelligent and well-meaning. But, while I am perfectly happy to have friendships or social interaction with people who disagree, even vehemently (I have some literally communist friends), I know full well that people around here do not feel the same way, so I keep my mouth shut about it. When in Rome, etc. Only a jerk or a fool mocks the state religion, which liberalism is here.
