The kid comes over and begins jumping on the couch. I figured he would bounce off and continue on his way. Nope. He bounced for quite some time. I was jostled every time he bounced. After several minutes, I was prepared to say, "Hey, let's not jump on the rec center's couch." Then another mom (not his) came over, and she said hi to him (figured they knew each other and she would get him to stop). Still kept jumping. Dad finally looked over (he was seated on an adjacent couch) and said, "Hey, Larlo! If you want to jump, come over here and jump on this couch." Jumped a while longer, then wandered off.

I just watched quietly and thought, "Wow."

If this is what passes for drama in your world...

5 year old kid you don't know is jumping on the couch at a rec center. You are seated nearby. So is the kid's parent...and the parent clearly isn't bothered. Would you say something? To the kid? To the parent?

Discuss.

This happened. I know the kid is 5 because the kid shared the info. The kid didn't appear to have SN, but was clearly a pistol. Parent was completely checked out.

Was this while you were waiting for your pickleball game?

A kid should not be jumping on the couch. It is not just wrong because someone was sitting their. It just makes it extra rude. Seriously, what is wrong with people? This kid needs to be told. If his parents won't then you have to. Or say something to the parent. "Hi! Is your parent around? You need to get off the couch. It is not a trampoline."

This. Since he was on the same couch I'd have said "oh, please don't jump on the couch I'm sitting on, I don't like it." If he continued to, I'd call out to his parent in a loud enough voice to embarrass them "Excuse me- sorry to bug you, but your son is jumping on the couch I'm sitting on and didn't seem to want to stop when I asked him to, could you please fetch him"

Same couch. I was there first. Alone.

"Excuse me. I'm sitting so close to where you are jumping, and I'm afraid you will end up crashing in to me. Please stop."

If it doesn't stop, I'd literally call out to the parent "Excuse me. I've been sitting here for the past 20 minutes and your child has started jumping on the couch right next to me. This is dangerous for me, and disrespectful to the rec. center's property. Please stop your child."

If parent did not stop their child, approach the rec center staff with the concern.

I would have asked the kid to stop it and get off the sofa.

I'm in my 50s now, and I have no problem these days telling neighbor kids to get off my lawn. I told a kid to stay out of the tree in my front yard the other day, and his mom just stood there and did nothing Yes, I'm a walking stereotype, but if their parents won't teach them basic manners then they will at least hear about them from me.

So many parents have abrogated their parenting responsibilities. Maybe they haven't grown up themselves? I'm beginning to wonder.

Yeah I would tell the kid to move on. Too many parents are for some reason letting their kids get away with a lot of BS.
I remember talking to acquaintance many years ago while his 3-4 year old kept on kicking his ankles and shins. Now that kid is a teenager and that acquaintance often complains how the teen does not listen, offer no respect, etc.

I would have asked him to stop. That’s what responsible adults do.

Um, kids shouldn't be jumping on rec center couches. Period.

What's wrong with you people?
