I’ve been in the opposite end —wrongfully accuses of shoplifted because of my race. In one incident, I was accused of stealing an item that the store didn’t even sell. The police were annoyed and my toddler was in tears. No sure that it all evens out.

I walked out of a sears holding a hat (I think I was running after my kids) and I just walked back in and put the hat back. But I got pretty far without realizing I was holding the freaking hat!

I don't call that shoplifting.

I realized as I unloaded my cart that I had a 99 cent pack of paper that I had not run through self check out. I did not go back. Now I feel guilty..I had frozen foods. It was a large parking lot and store. I will try to find a way to pay is forward too.

On time my brother-in-law accidentally shop lifted a Charleston Chew from a gas station. He felt so bad, he gave me $2 and asked me to go to the gas station to pay for it and apologize (he had to work that night and my sister was out of town.)

So I went the the gas station and tried to explain everything to the attendant, who made it seem like me coming back and her having to do all of this extra work was WAY more of a hassle than writing off $2.

I would just let it go. But now, every Christmas I get my brother-in-law a Charleston Chew for his stocking.

I would send them a letter with $2 in it. I would be worried that somewhere down the road I might be asked on a form whether I had ever committed a crime or stolen anything. I would not want to write out the Caprison incident and look silly but now I've lied on a form. If it was a govt form then lying on the form would be a bigger crime. Now I'm in possible felony territory. It would be unlikely but if I ever had to take a polygraph I would fail. I'm a terrible liar.

OP - take care of this so it doesn't turn into something bigger down the road.

I would think, “oh, bummer. I have to be more careful next time,” and I would move on. OP said she felt like crap- it’s way out of proportion to what happened. No harm was Intended and the item was so small no one was actually hurt. That’s what made me think anxiety.

You're a good person, OP, but this isn't something I would worry about. If it makes you feel better - I was at target once, and wanted some chapstick. I picked one off the shelf, then got distracted by a phone call, realized I had no chapstick in my hand, picked another out, paid for it, and went on my way. When I got home, I realized I'd dropped the original chapstick into my purse absentmindedly. I took it back to the store and the employees were shocked I even bothered.

Heck, I was checking out one time and accidentally took a bag of groceries that was left by someone else. The bag was mixed with mine and I think they left it there and went to the bathroom or something. I felt bad about that but what do you do when you get home and have a bag of food that someone else paid for? They’re going to be long gone and pissed off.

If that is the worse thing you've done OP, you are better than I am.
