For a great room, in which large table would fit. - should we go for a long rectangular table with or without leaves?

Have you tried World Market? Not sure your style but I really love their dining tables!

We have six chairs and the bench has as many leaves as the table so can go from 4 to 8 seats. It is awesome when we have lots of kids over and they all squeeze in. I would never have an adult sit on that side of the table.

Love the idea of a bench with leaves - that's so smart!! Where did you get it?

We had a custom table made by a store out in Virginia called Antique Tables: https://www.antiquetables.com/

I found the price very reasonable for the quality. They were great to work with - even delivered it to my home in DC.

Benches look cool but really suck.

Get enough chairs so that when your kids are older you can move the bench somewhere else. Benches are awkward and uncomfortable, and they are also a trend that will look dated pretty soon.

+1

I hate having to sit on a bench unless I’m at a picnic.

I always picture little kids falling backwards off benches in a dining room. Get chairs.
