Sure, maybe DC is hot but Fl is generally more humid and has been hotter for longer, so pools, concrete, etc are even hotter.

And daily thunderstorms are a PITA.

I've stayed at AKL twice. First time I got a savanna view room and didn't find it worth it. It seemed like the animals weren't out in the early morning or night, when we were in the room.
So the second time I stayed I got a standard view room, and requested it be somewhere quiet. They put us in a room right off the lobby, above the entry way! Definitely not "quiet." I immediately went to the front desk and asked if there was any way they could switch our room, and she offered me a room WAY down the hall on the Kudu trail. It was quite a hike from the lobby but we were ok with that. The room actually was considered "standard view" because there was some ugly utility building in our view, but it was also an area where TONS of animals hung out! We saw way more animals in that "standard view" room than in the savanna view room I had the previous time!

There are lots of places to take AC breaks at Disney, there is plenty of water to be had, and it does rain often in the mid afternoon. All the hotels have pools. I am going this August for the 1st time. I got free dining, and I figure I am willing to try anything once

I paid attention to the hotel we booked and the pool options there, reasoning that I wanted a place where we could hang at the resort if we are too hot at the parks. We are staying at AKL for the first time. I would have also considered Beach Club but I think my only option for free dining there was something very expensive like concierge level. I'd still like to try Beach Club another time.

We are planning to visit a Disney waterpark for the first time. I'm planning to possibly portable fans and / or bringing cooling washcloths around with us.

I'm trying not to overdo it - and to look at indoor options. We'll have our 3 FPs and an ADR each day. Anything else we get to will be gravy! I am planning for us to go to the parks in the AM, and then have a break at the hotel for a few hours in the afternoon, and then go back to the parks in the evening if we are up for it.

We've gone in August multiple times. It is hot but not much different than DC summer hot. A lot of the ride lines are indoors if you can time things right with the app, so the heat is escapable throughout the day. For us the worst part is lugging around water bottles because hydration is a must and Florida water is gross. Also, the hotel pool was not that refreshing because even the pool was hot.

I’ve been in August twice since I was a teacher and that’s when I had a break. It was hot and I sweated a lot but that’s expected. None of the parks were too bad except Animal Kingdom because it’s so big and most things there aren’t air conditioned. DH hated Animal Kingdom. The best was Epcot because so many rides are indoors.

I would go again then. I’ve heard that summer crowds have gotten better while “off season” isn’t so much off anymore so there’s another benefit.

I was in Orlando with my 4 year old in July last year and we opted to do legoland rather than Disney b/c we could not cope with the longer lines at DW in the heat.

As it was, DH and I nearly divorced over the misery of the experience. Not only was it unbearably hot and crowded, but just when we had gotten changed into swimsuits in the Black Hole of Calcutta filthy changing room (dripping with sweat) to go to the water park, it closed for risk of lightning, and the whole rest of the afternoon most rides stayed closed because lightning was possible even thought by storms were miles away. A few hours later it did have brief downpour. So we only got in maybe three miserable hours of time in lines waiting for a handful of rides.

The only consolation was that we didn’t go to Disney, which would have been worse. YMMV

It all depends on how you handle the heat. When I was younger it never used to bother me as long as I stayed hydrated. Now in my 50's, I can only take so much before I'm done. If I went to Disney World mid summer I would plan on doing rides broken up by inside activities (shopping, eating lunch, maybe catching a show) throughout the day.

The Florida sun gets way hotter than the DC sun gets. It's a different type of hot to me - far more intense.

If you enjoy hell it is a perfect time to go as are August and September. Nothing better than standing in long lines on baking asphalt.

We were there last May, the first week. It was in the 90's and I got a touch of heat exhaustion. Never again. We won't go between May and August, it's just not worth it. Everyone is miserable, there's so many people (because everyone is off), and because there's so many people lines are long (and not everyone uses deodorant).

Spring break would be better than July to be honest. Still crowded but at least the weather would be better...
