When I pass stuff on to family and close friends I pass it on freely. Anything I have sold was done only after friends and family didn’t want it. I am not a fashion forward person so all of my stuff came from Target and Carters, so it wasn’t trendy. It was comfy and well cared for. Use it, don’t use it, it is up to the other person. Once I pass it on, it is out of my hands what someone does. I doubt anyone sold it because none of it was all that exciting.

We also passed on the crib and swing and bouncy seat and car seats to my cousin. We are the anal retentive people who kept all the directions so it worked out well for everyone. I hope that she can pass it on to someone else who needs it.

We had one neighbor who gave us some toys that she wanted back. I thought it was a bit strange but my DS is not particularly rough and tumble so I wasn’t too worried about anything breaking. We returned them after he used them for a few years, so it worked out fine.

I was grateful to receive hand me downs, my cousin is fashion forward and willing to buy nicer stuff, so we inherited some really cute stuff. It lasted nicely. And went to my other cousin. I think some of the items have been on four or five of our kids. What, we all had kids with in a few years of each other. The cost of shipping an entire years wardrobe was less then buying one.

Yes and yes. For my friend who gave me really nice things, like a Burberry stroller, I actually sell the items after I'm done with them and have sent her the check. She thinks selling stuff is a hassle and I don't mind doing it.

I would have loved to get hand me downs, but the only person I knew who gave them to me wanted them back. Which sucked. I was too inexperienced to understand and didn’t really like her stuff. One pair of pants got destroyed (from Carters) so I replaced them and told her about it when I returned the clothing and she was upset.

I pass things on freely and tell friends to please pass them on and not sell them. I gave nursery furniture to a friend for her neighbor’s teen age daughter who got pregnant. I 100% don’t mind if teen mom sells the stuff when she no longer needs it.

If I had someone to pass down to then I always do. I do so without any stipulations such as give back when you’re done or please don’t sell. I never ever took clothes from people with those stipulations. Those are people who really don’t want to pass close down but are feeling pressure to do so somewhere. I refuse to be responsible for their things. Plus I feel like if they gave them to me they’re mine to do with whatever I want. Also, once they’re out of my house and out of my hands, that’s it. I’ve done a ton of consigning of my kids better things as well. The one thing that I am never ever take as hand me downs are shoes. I never understood friends who would buy or take used shoes. It is so bad for kids feet to wear shoes at some other child has already broken in and worn out the insole.

I've enjoyed receiving them and haven't passed any along since I'm trying to conceive a second kid. I may donate some to friends or condign clothing

Yes to my friends' clothing, who know what I like and give me clothes in usable condition.

No to my SIL's clothing, who not only sent me a large amount of deformed, stiff onesies past the end of their life, but ASKED FOR THEM BACK after a while... BECAUSE SHE PLANNED ON HANDING THEM OVER TO SOMEONE ELSE.

My response in this situation would have been "Oh my goodness, thank you so much for selling them for me! I'll keep an eye on the mail for the check!"

Er, how do you enforce this? It’s impossible.

Not a fan of getting them as they are usually worn out or different style than I choose. I buy clearance ahead of time so we almost always have what we need. I sometimes give it away, but usually I sell it at a consignment sale as mine are not hard on clothing and some look brand new.

I tell the expectation when I pass things along. If people do not want to abide - they do not need to accept.

Yes. I buy my kids clothes used and if they aren't damaged, I donate. Lately I throw out lots of pants with torn knee caps, there's no point in patching $2 pants.

Yes and yes. I have a toddler who is at day care all day and comes home covered in paint, food, mud...usually it washes out but when it doesn’t I don’t mind. I’d hate to buy brand new clothes just to have them ruined. I buy what I like for special occasions and pass on as much as I can when we’re done with it.

We give some away but my kids are wearing clothes for more than one season now, so they get more destroyed. It depends on each growth spurt.

Me again. Thinking about it, yes we still give away. Just the quantity is less, and actually sometimes the clothes are even less worn. It’s like they are Either REALLY worn, or not used at all.

Yes and yes, though most of my hand me downs end up being tossed due to being in bad shape. My eldest is a rough-and-tumble little boy who is very active and hard on clothes.
