I would respond that you’re sorry you couldn’t get the door, but you were home sick and occupied in the bathroom.

Text them that you have the flu and was sleeping.

They are the rude people, not you.

Just text them that you’re sick.

I would not answer for those people even if they knocked and I was home and feeling great. Literally.

I'd text back, "Was busy today. If she'd like me to answer the door next time then she should text first to see if I have time for the interruption."

Would you want cookies made by someone with the stomach flu? I thought the sarcasm was evident

You should 100% say this and 100% not feel bad. They are being insane. If they want to be mad- let them. You did nothing wrong.

You should text the husband back and say, "Sorry Larry, I was pooping. I tried to clean myself up real quick but was too late."

Uh I know people who don’t answer the door ever unless they’re expecting someone when they’re home alone - for safety.

I was half asleep on the couch when I heard someone stomp onto my porch, and then loud talking. I figured it was a solicitor leaving a flyer so I stayed put, even though the talking continued longer than you would expect. There was never a knock or ring of the doorbell.

Suddenly, my phone rang from in the kitchen. I got up to look and saw it was my neighbor across the street. She’s older and sort of a busybody, so I thought she was calling to tell me someone was on my porch. I walked to a front room to peek out the window to see if I could see whoever it was walking away, and I saw my neighbor walking back up her driveway. I quickly texted her back and told her I was sorry, and asked if she needed anything. She said simply “never mind”.

I just got a text from her husband that basically said that it’s rude not to answer the door for a neighbor, what if there had been an emergency, that we have kids and they may need a neighbor one day.

I’m feeling awful, but also a little annoyed. Do you always answer your door, even if you are sick? Was the way I handled this wrong? Thoughts?

This was your mistake. You should have texted an hour or so LATER "Hi Gladys, I see I missed your call earlier. I am home with the flu, did you need something? DH will be home soon"

+1

I would reply to the husband - I'm home with the flu, I sent Gladys a text when I saw it was her and she said she did not need anything. Have a nice afternoon.

This is how I would handle it too. So rude to come to your door if she could just text instead. And I'm pretty sure giving older people the flu is frowned upon.

OP neighbors like this are there to stay so nip behaviors that’s would stress you in the bud. Keep the peace, but set a boundary and respect it. Don’t feel awful. It’s really not her business what you were doing. You could have been sick, could have been masturbating, could have been on a conference call, crying or just doing nothing and scratching your hair. Just because people live next door does not mean they are entitled to your time as soon as you are home. It’s impolite to come over unannounced and bold to complain with a text to you afterward. I would not explain why I wasn’t available. I would just say something along the lines of, “Sorry we couldn’t connect. Please call or text before next time to make sure I’m available for company”
