Your counter-tops should contrast with your cabinets, so I'd go with something dark. What about something more streamlined than granite like quartz or slate? I would balance that with a darker tile for your floor, and a lighter grey-blue on your walls.

OP so sorry to hijack, but we just bought and this picture looks exactly like my kitchen - cabinet color, floor color/style and counter color - no backsplash but white walls. I don't hate it but know it's a dated look. We are opening up our space and I'm wondering if we should just go ahead and make cosmetic updates.

I'd prefer to leave the floors and DH hates white kitchens. Any other suggestions on ways to make this kitchen look current?
