You can do well at TJ and sports. Just like the you can do well academically and at sports at base HS. What’s the point.

Congrats on a great basketball season.

But academics vs athletics is a false dichotomy. My TJ kid is very involved in extracurricular music and drama. And is certainly not performing on a national level, but that’s what they do with friends after school, and has some regional recognition. Hates sports, but points out (correctly) that marching band is physically demanding and requires teamwork. I would be concerned if my kid wasn’t engaging in the community outside of classes. I don’t think they have to play a sport they dislike though. There are lots of ways to engage.

Just in case you've forgotten, TJ is a very selective STEM magnet school. All of their students are strong academically. Their students win more academic awards than any base school!

You sound very insecure. You updated a post from a week ago to let us know that the team lost but win more academic awards than any other school? What was the purpose of the update. Something tells me that you are living your life through your kid. They're only in HS for 4 years so what are you going to do with the rest of your life? Many of the well rounded, athletically AND academically gifted kids will be attending the same college as your kid...how will you manage? Will you send them to college with a TJ patch on their shirt?

Funny how some parents think that you have to be either successful in athletics or academics. Personally, I prefer those who are successful in both. Yes, the TJ kids are probably more accomplished in academics but to what point? They can spend all day coding and take a job where they're doing... more coding but at the end of the day, they will be reporting to someone who is well rounded and can actually hold a conversation and relate to others.

I’m so tired of the hate and gratuitous attacks on TJ kids and families on dcum. I really wish people would stop posting any TJ questions and comments on DCUM and seek alternative, more helpful resources.

I am proud of my kid, just like you are proud of yours. And she is well aware there are many things she is not great at. Like anything that involves coordination. Or extroversion. SMDH.

But the “Nerds” comment was clearly meant to be an insult— probably posted by a HS kid with a day off school. My point is that some kids don’t see being a nerd as a bad thing. And, academics and grades and classes and college aside, I’m glad my kid found an environment where she is happy and thriving. Isnt. that what we all want for our kids.

PS— my DC 2 found his place in a base HS and is making me every bit as proud.
