Goalkeeper is certainly not the most popular position on my son’s team but there are a number of boys every year who express an interest in trying. And whether a popular position or not, it’s a very important position. And a lot of pressure, too! On my son’s team, the goalkeeper is definitely valued by players, coach and parents because the offense is not all that strong. If they aren’t scoring a lot, it’s vital to have a goalkeeper who can make the tough saves.

My son’s the primary GK for his u11 team. Like your son, he is extremely dependable and hardworking. I would be absolutely livid if this happened to him. It’s 100% inappropriate. My son realizes that he could always be bumped during the season if a current teammate demonstrates more talent but that is different from a guest player being brought in for a tournament. I’d consider walking away mid-season if the TD isn’t responsive to your concerns.

Yep. I’d be gone (even if it wasn’t my kid getting the screw job). It teaches kids the wrong lessons.

OP, I should say it is U11 age group. Goalkeeper is part of three guest players from Europe intended to boost status of club.


Why would they not split minutes for a U11 player, much less a keeper? Yes, please skip the tournament unless they can guarantee your keeper minutes.

I understand the value of being a team player and all that, and if this was a case of another kid from your team moving up to the GK and knocking you down a peg well that's life. But to bring in a ringer from outside just so the club can be better is insulting at best.

Given the demand for GK in so many teams around the area you should be able to find another option from a team that cares about your kid's progress (though I do second the comment a U11 should not be fixed at one position just yet).

This is off the charts unacceptable. It's a slap in the face to your child and you should treat it that way. If it were me, I'd report the club for using an unauthorized player, because I'll bet that "guest player's" paperwork isn't in order.

The only way I would ever accept something like this is if it were part of an exchange where my child gets to go play in Europe.

OP - hold on a second. Is the coach saying your son is not going to play at all? My DS is DA level. They have two goalies and split playing time. One plays first half and the other plays second half. Are you sure it’s not something like that? You mention not starting and then jump to not playing and just watching

It's his only position; he doesn't want to go; I don't want to go. I don't mean to create rancor. I just wondered if I was being selfish by refusing the offer that he "warm up" the guest keeper.


Then nope I wouldn't go and I don't think you're being unreasonable.

It takes guts for them to ask your kid to warm up his replacement. I would probably be done with that coach. This is way beyond the pale

Dallas Cup? Or something at ESPN in Florida? I wouldn't send my U11 player to an event like that without some understanding about playing time. And I would also question why a U11 team needs to invest that kind of travel at that age. Your overzealous club and parents will price a lot of players out if they start this just to raise their reputation.


NP who would add that it's not great that the team has OPs son playing only in goal at this age.
