She had the choice (maybe still has)... if she is unhappy how things turned out for her kid, she should have made a different decision.

I didn't redshirt my late August birthday kid. She met all of the state benchmarks in K, but was among the youngest in her class and definitely lacked the social maturity of a lot of her peers. Ultimately, the school strongly suggested that we allow DD to repeat K and doing so has turned out to be the best decision we've made. I don't necessarily regret not redshirting her in the first place because it was worth a try, but at the end of the day starting "on time" wasn't the right place for her.

I had a boy's birthday in late august and a girl's birthday in early september. I don't hold them back at all. DS went having just turned 5, and DD started a couple of weeks shy of turning 5. Turns out great. Somebody's got to be the youngest.

So, so far people have said (1) redshirting was a great decision for them, (2) starting on time worked out fine, or (3) regret not waiting a year. (The other responses from those who have strong feelings against redshirting but have not faced the decision themselves are irrelevant). Wondering if anyone has actually regretted redshirting their DD

Late September DD with a September 30th cutoff. Did not redshirt. She has been the youngest in her class for 5 years. She is doing well.

The prevalence of redshirting around here is baffling. The cutoff is what it is. Unless there is an educator telling you it might be best to wait, send your kid to school on schedule.

Educators told us to wait due to immaturity issues. It was 100% the right call.

That’s a made up reasons to keep you in their preschool longer. Can’t wait til it’s outlawed.

We held back our late August DD this year, and she will go to private K next fall right after she turns 6 - we do not regret this decision at all. She is much more confident this year, loves school, and is excited to go every day, whereas last year (when she was the youngest by 4+ months and in several cases more than a year younger than several male classmates), it was a daily struggle. She is also much closer in age to the kids in this class (several September/October birthdays - plus one June boy).

OP are you planning on doing the Potomac Redshirt? This is a holdback twice (middle school and high school) so they are playing sports at 20 with kids 2 - 6 years younger.

Same. DD is in college now and immaturity was an issue into high school. She never seemed like one of the oldest kids socially. Not even close. Academically she did well.

We held her back because it was clear that she didn't have the social skills/social maturity to be the youngest kid in the class. She's now in middle school and it was absolutely the right decision. She's still immature for her age; she would struggle socially even more if she wasn't one of the oldest.

Yes, we sent our August dd. Never considered holding her back based on her own abilities and social emotional development.

The 7 year old boys are the only thing that would give me pause.

Our town has a 28% red shirt rate.
