They were there, you just did not notice them. Now, when watching with my DD on either the TV or her computer, I noticed even in the early episodes, you can see nipple outlines on esp. Rachel but I think maybe Monica too. I just do not remember this AT ALL; this is something I would have totally remembered as that would have been really racy or cutting edge back in 1994; on TV during "family" hours.
So my question is...is it because our TVs now have better definition? Or has it been added in after the fact? Did you remember noticing this when watching it way back in 1994 onwards?
