It was not easy for students 20 years ago to finish undergraduate in 4 years - because of the registration process and the scheduling of certain classes. I went to law school at Ohio State, so my perception may be incorrect. My classmates who were not in an honors program had to do an extra semester or summer term to get their bachelors.

Columbus is only about a 6 hour drive away from the DMV. Columbus is a growing city that actually has job openings. We have noticed a lot more kids from the DMV going there. Your son might want to ask the local alumni network here to meet with some folks who went there to see how they liked it.
Good luck.
If you drive fast and start by leaving from Gaithersburg :-§
The only tough part of the drive is around Cumberland as it is very curvy.

They gave me considerable money and I was in the honors program. My biggest advantage in life is that I have really great executive function skills, so navigating a big school was an advantage for me. I would make sure this is the case for your child. Otherwise, do not go to OSU. It is huge and you can easily get lost in the shuffle. Literally no one cares if you go to classes. Ever. My freshman roommate failed out because she skipped every class.
