Subject: Anyone with south Asian in laws who moved in with you?
I live with my asian in-laws -- not quite the same brand -- and it is awesome. They do a lot around the house, and the kids love them. Great bunch of people

I'm male. If I was their daughter in law, things might be different. In most Asian societies, the DiL gets bossed around by a resident MiL.

Your information is incorrect. You can be away for up to a year as a GC holder or even up to two years so long as you apply for a re-entry permit before you depart U.S.
She's supposed to be an actual "resident" - not just stop by every few months for a quick visit while having her permanent home in Nepal.

Mil stayed with us for over two months. I was seriously going insane. Find a place for them close by but not inside your home. You both need some time to detox. Living with the in-laws For extended periods, expecially if from different cultural background (as also in my case) have the potential to bring up odd dynamics and very high tension.

Op here. I can see the same thing happening with my MIL. Most likely my husband will spend hundreds or quite possibly thousands of dollars on the application fees and she will not come. My MIL has a fear of flying. She has never traveled to the US. We will have to spend extra money to buy other family members flights to accompany her during travel and even there’ still a HIGH chance she will not travel this way as well. I really do like my husbands family but god it’s frustrating when money is wasted. A few months ago we wasted 4K because his mother couldn’t get on the freaking plane. We’re far from being rich.
Hasn't your husband talked to his mother about whether she wants to move to the US permanently? The filing fees are not all that much but if she moves here you will have to buy health insurance for her and pay for travel costs ball and forth to the home country. Does she even want to move in with your family, especially as your BIL still lives back home? I am Indian and while my parents are happy to make extended visits every two years they have no desire to uproot their lives in India and move here on a green card. Why isn't your husband bringing his mom over on a tourist visa first? It can be very lonely here for older immigrants who have to depend on their kids for everything.
His mother has a fear of flying unfortunately but my husband thinks she will eventually come around. He says most likely they will never move here but he’s doing it as a backup plan I think. I know we paid 5k for his green card fees. I am not sure how much it will cost to apply for 3 people. I truly adore his family seriously I feel so blessed to have them in my life.

My mom's sister petitioned my mom, and included my dad and my siblings who were under 21. I had one older brother over 21 who wasn't included.
That took 14 years and we all came to the US at the same time.
