Should be before 3. He may not be neat, but he should be able to feed himself.

OP, my 18 month old feeds herself. It is not always pretty. Some foods are harder than others. But she practices using utensils every day at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

You have a parenting issue that you have not taught your child to sit at the table. If he cannot sit, you put him in a high chair or booster with a strap to train him. You are selfish to feed yourself and not put your child first. You don't chase your child with food. You teach them to sit at the table with you and share a meal.

Yes, he should already be well on his way with this. My 4 y/o sometimes still needs a little help with spaghetti noodles, but doesn't need to be outright fed.

OP, you need to talk to your child's pediatrician about why he can't feed himself. This is a concern. Can he not use a fork and spoon? Has anyone brought this up with you?

My 2.5 year old can use a fork and a spoon pretty adeptly, as can the rest of the kids in her daycare class. It is not typical for a 3 year old to only be able to eat finger foods.

We all sit at the table and eat dinner, including my 20 month old and 4 year old (who both feed themselves). Sometimes the kids get an easy variation of what we're having, like a piece of bread instead of rice because they don't like it, but we all eat at the same time.

Sit the child between you and take turns giving him bites. Also, work on using a fork and spoon. He should be able to do so already.

First of all, you should all be eating together as a family.

Second, he can assist in feeding your child just as well as you can and that's what you should tell him. Not to mention, can your child not feed himself to some degree? He's 3, not 1.
