There's a way to handle this without screaming and shaming people.

And to everyone saying "oh book the an extra seat" often it's not that easy. The airlines can see that the "extra" seat doesn't have an occupant, so they will put someone there. Or they won't guarantee that your "extra seat" will be next to you.

So no, buying an extra seat is not an option because the airlines won't honor it since there isn't a ticketed person in that seat.

I have mixed feelings here. If I travel with my husband, we chose seats next to each other.

The woman was horrible, but Norma was terrible too. She called her names and "kiss my fat ass"? C'mom.

Thumbs up to the passengers, who were supportive even though Norma wasn't very classy.

Thumbs down to United Airlines. The seats are small, the middle seat SUCKS.

I feel like airlines could do this in a responsible way. Like have a weight limit. If you weigh over 225lbs, you have to buy the "hefty seats" or two seats.

I think though, most were reacting to her rudeness and not her actual problem. She was correct in complaining but she needed to complain to the airhostess and refuse to sit down in her seat. Instead she started being bitchy to these two people.

The airline should have realized that these two obese people were gaming the system by asking for a window and an aisle seat. They man should have moved to the middle seat and the woman should have got the aisle seat.

When the passengers in another plane were offended by body odor of a travelling family, they complained and got those people off. In this case, only the woman was inconvenienced and so the rest of the passengers did not want to side with her.

how can someone be so wrong, yet so right at the same time!

I completely agree with her, but not with the way she handled it. To sit for 4+ hours squished between two people....I couldn't do it.

She didn’t seem that squished. You cannot expect much more when you book a middle seat. The fat couple were smart to pay for reserved seating to secure better seats. The lady could have done the same.

Good for this woman for sticking up for herself. She paid for her ticket and should not have to be in a sandwich for 4 hours.

As a frequent flier I will say that airlines really need to have policies around this. It’s not fair to anyone now. I have to admit I’m tired of having my limited space taken up by seat mates. There have been times I can’t get my work done because I don’t have room to move my arms enough to type on my laptop.


I fly all the time for work too but yours isn't a compelling argument. All the airlines are required to do is get you there, safe and relatively on time, and without any physical harm. Not being able to use your laptop is inconvenient but not their problem.

Agree. But the gate agent should have caught the two larger passengers before boarding and addressed it. People need to take responsibility for themselves and they knew they would not fit into one seat. But when passengers won’t take responsibility then it’s up to the airline to address the situation before everyone boards.
