The men aren't on average weird, but any given normal guy is going to filter you out for being too tall, too short, too religious, not religious enough, too smart, too dumb, etc. So you'll only interact with the smaller percentage of normal guys for whom you're a good fit.
The weird/predatory/too old guys are casting a wide net and messaging everyone so more women interact with them relative to their numbers.

I'm 53, and plenty of 30 year old women do. Even the ones who say they won't date anyone over 40.
I’m 33, and would not, at this point in my life, date a man over 45. As far as I know, none of my girlfriends would, either.
