Yep, I left our Mazda C-X-5 running for a long time while I shoveled the driveway. No problem, it was toasty inside and ice was melting outside.

I think it’s impossible for our cars to lock with the fob inside the stopped car, engine on or off.

As someone who grew up in a very cold climate, I have definitely left my car running that long outside to warm it up, while I chipped ice off of it, while I cleared snow and shovelled etc.

I have never done it with a car that has keyless entry, but that's really scary!

I don't understand people who do this. I sometimes saw people leave their car running in DC (not delivery people) and always wondered why they weren't worried about it getting stolen. And they do get stolen a lot in just this way, according to crime reports.

I'm so scared to get locked out of my car in just this way! I'm 99% sure my Subaru has a feature that doesn't allow the doors to be locked when the engine is running, but I still leave the door open.

I don’t understand the point of the car locking you out? Why wouldn’t the car just turn off like the eco mode of so many new cars?

You're welcome. We learned this the hard way when my 79 year old dad bought a new Honda CRV this year. He had the car running, got out of it to check something and was promptly locked out. Fun times!

If you have the 2nd fob, there is a release that pops out an actual metal key. That can unlock the door. There’s a cover on the driver door handle that pops off exposing the keyhole.

Call the dealership. They should be able to help. Or AAA. When you get back in, you need to go into Set-up and change the default for locking the car to a different option. My car's default (different brand but similar system) is to lock after 1 minute. I changed it to driving over 10 mph to avoid your problem. Hope you got back into your car okay!

You probably cannot turn the car off with the second fob either. The car thinks it is being used. Does Mazda have a customer service line?

Very punitive on Mazda’s part. Just have the car turn itself off. Like every other decent newish car on the market.
