The WSJ Times is much more informative. On their rankings, Michigan is listed at #28, Virginia at #51.

Find out what aspects of Michigan he is drawn to: the size, football culture, town? Then, use Naviance search engines or colleges guides (such as Princeton Review) to find other schools that meet those criteria (but are easier to get into).

Great college, great college town andI believe they are very straightforward with merit aid. You have x gpa and x ACT and you get $x. Plus, rolling admissions so you apply and get in early.

Minnesota might be a good backup.
