John Doe cannot legit bring Jane Taylor instead of Larlo Smith. If it was John Doe plus guest, that's fine. OP (who is Larlo Smith in this scenario) can bow out if she wants to, but her ex does not get to sub in a new +1 if someone else has been invited and named on the invitation.
Pretttty sure one phone call to the groom and John Doe will be bringing Jane Taylor to the wedding.

THIS. I'm trying to figure out why this is even a question. Who are these crazy people that's telling you that you're still expected to attend? Is it the Bride or Groom? I bet the answer is NO. His friend is getting married; you were ONLY invited because you were his girlfriend but now you're not. Why would you even want to go?

If we had been close to the bride and groom as a couple, to the point where I’d consider them friends too, I would not go to the wedding (even if I’d been invited by name or whatever...it would just be awkward and I would not want to detract from the couple). I like this suggestion though. I think it would be a classy move to send a card and small gift on your own, with a note about despite what happened you wish them the best and hope they had a wonderful wedding day.
