This is like the exact opposite of the Orlando thread! LOL

It’s also really, really, REALLY friggin white. People there are even more oblivious within their UMC white bubble than folks in Chevy Chase. It’s an amazing place, but I think it would be difficult for well-educated POC to live there.

Not really. Minneapolis welcomes a TON of refugees so there is a sizable Somali, Liberian, and other African population. Also a ton of Vietnamese and Hmong for the same reason.

The one thing it doesn't have is a large African-American population, but that's because during the migration to the north, most settled in Chicago. The blacks that are here are lower-class. It hurts everyone that there isn't a larger middle and upper-class black population like cities like DC have.

My cousins live there and are black. They love it. I will tell you that the large companies in Minn have sizeable numbers of black senior executives. I would love to live in Minn if it wasn't so cold. Would not be my first choice.

I couldn't do it as a die hard DC fan and a person who hates the cold, but everyone I know who lives there loves it - and I'm black. That's saying something. Minn has the nicest people I think I've ever met. Not nasty nice like in the South, but generally nice people.

What I can say most about Minneapolis is that it has all of the aspects of a larger city in a smaller, less stressful, cheaper package. The arts here are huge -- all kinds. I think we have the second most theater seats per capita to NYC or something like that. A lot of craftsmen, musicians, breweries all over the place. It's authentic and non-flashy. Like DC, people are also well-read, educated, and our NPR station here is one of the most popular in the country.

I wouldn’t start bragging about public radio up in MN. MPR let Garrison Keillor turn the organization into his sexual playground #metoo

I currently live in Portland, OR and when I go to Minneapolis I am always surprised by how much more diverse it is than here. So many Somalis, Hmong, etc. I grew up in Manhattan and love cities. I have to say that Minneapolis is one of my favorites. The weather isn’t great but the city and suburbs are very prepared for it.

Minneapolis and DC have much in common. In particular, both places have no shortage of smug, passive aggressive residents.

NP, and we are in same situation. Considering a pending transfer to Minneapolis with HHI around 350k. Love the cost of living, love the Twin Cities, but downside is we just bought a house in the DMV in a neighborhood we like. On the fence if we should do this or not.

Love the twin cities. We've been told to expect to relocate by the end of 2019 from our current awful southern suburban sprawl city and DC is our first choice followed closely by Minneapolis. (I'll cry if they send us to Phoenix)

I have never lived there but i would raise children there. Everyone i know from the Midwest (Madison, Chicago, Des Moines) is so nice with family-oriented values. They all seem to greatly value higher education for their kids.

Minneapolis would be on my list of places to live if it wasn't so cold there.

Yes, love MN. We lived in Duluth, such a beautiful area.

Significantly dryer - no humidity at all. There is no liquid water for a longer stretch of the year. There isn’t a full-on mud season since the snow evaporates to a large degree. But the temp is far lower.

But if you can handle Portland, you can handle this. I hate damp, and therefore preferred the upper Midwest to N New England myself.

My sister lives there. It is a lovely city and they are very happy. We always enjoy our visits in summer. The state fair rocks.

BUT it is COLD from October until April, sometimes May. And because there is only one major airport, it makes airfare expensive to fly in or out.
