Your first reason should not get you into trouble if you just explain you bought the Fitbit but then remembered too late she might prefer and Apple watch, and you offer to exchange it.
The second reason makes you sound cheap. I wouldn't bring it up unless purchasing the Apple watch will actually make a dent in your savings, or your wife is likely to agree that the extra cost is not worth it. I personally think they are overpriced but would have no difficulty actually affording one for DH if that was what he really wanted.
