Lots of people are health conscious these days and sugary gifts aren’t so welcome. Yes teacher was rude but at least your gift was used by someone else. It wasn’t the right gift for the teacher obviously but you had no way to know that.

I always ask my kids to observe what their teachers like to drink and eat, and report back to me. That helps minimize unwanted gifts since I usually get a good sense of who DOES like candy, who likes Starbucks or Dunkin' etc. I do think the majority of teachers don't want candy though. I know I don't. But I would never EVER be rude to a child.

Ugh parents like you "but she wanted to so I had too" No you as the adult knew it was not a good choice so you tell your kid no and you don't do it.

I think many people these days are health conscious and don't appreciate gifted candy. I know I wouldn't eat it, though I certainly would never hurt and embarrass a child by giving it away in front of them. If I were to pass it on, it would be in a different class. Not an especially thoughtful gift imo, but no need to be rude about it especially when MS/HS gifts are not ubiquitous.

No. You didn't have to. Most parents don't, actually. Stop it, the teachers don't want all these gifts. They want administration and parents off their backs, and they want to feel appreciated for specific actions they have done for their students.


As a former teacher from before the crazy gift era, I found the whole thing extremely suspect.

I don't give to teachers. I personally thank the ones who go above and beyond for my children. My teen is old enough to express his own appreciation, and indeed shows it daily in class by being passionate about the subjects he likes the most.



I asked my teen if any classmates give the HS teachers gifts (we don't). Her response was, "Only the suck-ups do."
