+1. When I was in my 20's, I could wear size 12-14 in kids. At that time, that would be 0-2 in women's sizes, depending on the brand. Beware size inflation. Back before I got chubby (thanks to kids and my laziness), I was seriously in danger of being sized out of women's clothes. I'm short and only certain brands maintained their size dimensions.

My kid switches between kids size 14-16 and women’s size 00 (gap sell this) or 0. She is 5’4” and 95 pounds. We’ve also done some women’s size 2-4 but they still tend to be rather large on her. It’s a little frustrating because I am sure all these clothes will not fit her for long. She’s been gaining a pound or two a month with the puberty growth spurt. I’m hoping it evens out next year.

OP the answer is: It depends.

Children's clothing is fairly generic and based mostly on expected average height and weight. Once you move out of that to women's sizing, the size is more about body type, with the main factor in size becoming the waist, with height variation accounted for by the Petite department for shorter than average women, and the Women's department for generally larger profile bodies.

The juniors department is somewhat in between children's sizing and average women's sizing, but accounts for trendiness and generally cheaper materials and lower costs.

Absolutely. I wear an 8 or 10. A child would be in the very chubby category (as am I!) if she could wear my clothes.

If she can wear regular girls sizes there’s no way the next size up is in the middle aged mom category.

My DD wears a 12-14 slim and I just got her a pair of ladies XXS pants from American Eagle that fit perfectly. Maybe start with a 0-2 or XS and bring some different sizes into the dressing room.

My DD, now a 16-18 started with 00 and XS and is now a 2 and a S

American Eagle and the like will have those sizes..

much much too big. I can sometimes fit a girls 16 (though sometimes it is cut more for a teen with no curves and I can't). I'm regularly a women's 00 or 0.

Girls sizes rely more on height rather than waist size. Children's clothes may run wide to accommodate a range of children.

The smaller sizes in the Juniors department - I’d start with 3/size small or so. It’s going to vary a lot by brand though. Juniors sizes will likely fit her better than women’s/misses sizes.
