(I would assume most parents around here whose kids go to schools on the "biggest party schools" list are well aware of the school's reputation and are o.k. with sending their kid there anyway.)

Even if the comment is true, it's still intended as a dig. Plain and simple.

Look, a robust social life is good. Binge drinking isn't. To the previous poster who said that all schools are party schools, that isn't true. Maybe the "friend" has alcoholics in her family and is really concerned about sending an 18 year old to a university known for binge drinking. Maybe she wanted to make sure that you as a parent were aware of this reputation. All in all, if you're having a conversation about acceptances, then you're inviting her to have an opinion.

Who says calling a college a party school is a negative thing?

Does the school have a reputation for being a party school? If so, they aren't slamming the school. It is what it is.

From what I've seen, often the hard party schools are also academically strong. You can have both.

I think you are taking something well known and taking it as a personal attack on your kid's decision to apply/go to that school. My kid applied to a known party school or two and he doesn't party at all.
