In the Washington metro area, you have a cross section of folks who drive Escalades. I live in upper NWDC. While I am one of the few in my neighborhood who drives an Escalade if you drive in Potomac where my kids went to private school, there are plenty of families pulling in and out of Mater Die, The Heights, St. Andrews, Bullis, etc. with Escalades. And, most, if not all, of them were white. There are a lot of Escalades with diplomatic tags. So, assume it is the preferred vehicle of some diplomats. The bottom line is people spend their money on what they want and I wish the same poster would stop with the threads on Escalades. It's getting quite tired.

Secret service uses Chevy Suburban (same platform) and Chevy Yukons generally, not Cadillacs.

I take a lot of Uber black SUVs for work and probably 1/3 of them are Escalades.

It looks tasteful and pure Americana if driven by a waspy mom who lives in a very high-end neighborhood.

It looks tacky and ghetto if driven by a car-rich schmuck and/or parked in a downscale neighborhood.

Are Cadillac Escalades good?

For the environment? No.

You’re crazy. Black people sink money into cars. And I say this as a black person. I have so many family members or know of acquaintances who live in a 1BR apt in a good or bad part of town and have Mercedes, Cadillac, BMW, etc.. I grew up in the suburbs and skinny white women with big sunglasses and one kid in the back driving Cadillacs were the norm!!!

Yeah, one of the first things I noticed when I moved EOTR was how many really nice cars were parked in front of really crappy houses. One of my neighbors explained it this way: "you never have to invite your friends to your house if you don't want to, but they'll see your car all the time no matter what."

Certainly not my mindset, but if you put value in appearances and only have the money for one, I guess it makes sense.

Are they good? Yes, probably best in class for what they do, although there isn’t much competition. They will clearly be best in class once the redesign comes out for the 2020 model year.

Will you ever fully use its capabilities? Unless you have a boat, RV, or take frequent road trips, probably not.

Is it a good value? No. You can get about 90% of the Escalade’s features and parts (including the most important ones: engine, suspension and transmission) for about 75% of the price in a fully loaded Yukon Denali package. But an Escalade is much like a diamond engagement ring in that its price is completely disconnected from value or market pricing. You buy it for a non-rational reason.

All of that said, I would get one, but I come from a poor minority immigrant family. My wife, on the other hand, is from a white UMC family and she wouldn’t be caught dead in one so she happily drives her fully loaded (white!) Yukon XL Denali.

Buying a car like this is substantially how you feel about it at a gut instinct level.

By the way, I am shocked at how many Suburban/Yukon/Tahoe are in and around McLean. They are relatively low-key but are actually pretty expensive.

Yeah, I used to live in Springfield, then recently moved to Tysons, and I'm constantly amazed by the expensive cars running around here. In Springfield or Annandale, driving an expensive car is "BMW 3 series, Mercedes CLA". In McLean-Tysons it's a BMW M model or Mercedes AMG. It's just flexing on a whole other level

Driving beyond those taillights drives me nuts

It's honestly a nice truck; best-in-class engine, which makes hauling family and toys (boat, RV, etc.) a breeze. A bit tacky though.

A lot out in Loudoun. Suburban moms drive them. Personally I like the way they look, especially the pearl white ones

I thought the Range Rover was more of a black thing? Escalade more of new money white Catholics?

I see more foreigners driving them than anything.
