With a Tesla, I'd be worried about a local dealer for service. I drive past a nearly-finished Tesla dealer in Tampa every day, that has been sitting unopen for over a year. No idea what is going on there!

I do want an electric car for my next car due to the long commute. I'm more of a chevy person though so am considering the Volt. I also want to have the option of gas use-I take a long road trip at least yearly and need that.

We just got the 3. My spouse is super cautious about things and wasn't that worried about the service aspects. He takes care of all that, so I didn't look into it too much. His big motivation is that the doesn't want to have to buy gas again ever. And we won't. It's nice not to have to worry about that, and the charging stations are becoming very easy to find. (It also goes about 300 mils on a battery charge, so it's not like you need to find one when you're just tooling around town.) We don't buy luxury cars, but we do place a premium on efficiency.

Our last two cars before it were both hybrids, and we liked those too, but you did need to fill up --- just not as often.

40K on car? Never ever. That's crazy talk. 12-15K on a used car is bad enough.

Some people make what can only be described as shit loads of money. When you make shit loads of money, and all reasonable and expected expenses are covered, $40k doesn’t seem like that much money to spend on a car. It’s all relative.

Coal-powered cars for $40K. But you can get a loaded F150 V8 for the same price. Which would you say is more fun?

I test drove a lot of cars before deciding on the Tesla, everything from Bentley to Mercedes S class to a Lambo. The Tesla is amazing and FUN to drive: I am not a car person but LOVE this car.

Live in DC without convenient access to power outside (street parking). No electric for me until I move somewhere more convenient.

I just got myself a model 3 in August. Previously, I've been driving a couple of minivans for 2 decades. I've always wanted to go electric but always figured the choices available were under powered and has short range. Until Tesla come along, I've never thought I would buy an american car, nor a car that cost over $30k. I recently told my wife that from now on, all our future car purchases will be electric.

Look at the total cost of ownership per year and decide based on that. Focus on keeping your pocket green.

Get a car you like, but I would not go for a plug-in hybrid. It just seems like you're asking for the inconveniences of an electric and a gas engine. It's like double the trouble and not really worth it

If it makes you happy, yes. I usually buy $25-30K cars and keep them till they die. My next one will be $50K. We've been steadily saving the money and paying cash. I would be worried about Tesla as others said but it if that is what you want, go for it.

I think the Tesla cars are sooo sexy. I want one when I have more disposable income.

No to Tesla, Yes to $40k car if you can afford it.

I'm mainly concerned about the hassles when the vehicle needs to be repaired for whatever reason. Tesla tries to control everything and I don't like that.
